Mother's Day in Banff

If you’re like me, Mother’s Day has a habit of sneaking up on you. Perhaps it’s because we’re too preoccupied with better weather, or maybe because the date changes every year. Maybe it’s that it’s usually in the first half of the month, and April went by way too fast, and time only ever seems to move faster and faster… or that might just be me.

Regardless, here’s some ideas, last minute or not-so-last-minute, to help you out this year.

If your mom is a flower lover, the first and obvious choice is a fresh flower bouquet. Our fridge is full of late spring and early-summer flowers. Don’t just think about what her favourite flower or colour is, though that’s sure to come in handy; think about her personal aesthetic. If your mom loves roses, consider a contemporary rose bouquet. If she’s one to always stop and smell the flowers, ask for a bouquet with fragrant flowers in it. Hyacinths smell like lilacs, oriental lilies are wonderfully perfume-y, and freesia, waxflower, and boronia smell like citrus candy. Has she had a stressful year? Then maybe a bouquet full of eucalyptus and some dried lavender in there to calm. Is she an artist or visual person? We can make a bouquet with a variety of textures so it’s a feast for the eyes!

Or perhaps a dried flower bouquet or arrangement is more her style; something everlasting she can display in the house. There’s a whole wall in the back of our shop where you can pick out inspiration, but it can be a bit overwhelming; if you have a budget and an idea of colour palette, we can always work off of that, and we love working with dried materials!

If you’re shopping for a so-called Plant Mom, there’s another more obvious choice: add to her collection with another tropical plant (or several!) We have fresh tropicals arriving Thursday, including 2, 4, and 6 inch assorted tropicals, 6” peace lilies, and an assortment of 4” succulents. In shop right now as well we have some amazing white phalaenopsis orchids, 4” jade plants, and a few cacti. We also have 4 and 6” snake plants in stock, which are the ultimate plant for a budding plant mom or someone with low light and “when I remember” watering habits (see my previous post, What Your Plants Say About You).

Our pot selection has grown as well, from the little guys to the big ones, so there’s something for everyone. We also recently have learned about the world of terrarium building, so for the more creative sorts, we have a selection of glass bowls and containers that could be home to a whole little world of baby plants and moss.

But it’s not just plants and flowers here at BMT; we have a lot of decor items as well, like pretty hanging pots and macramé, unique vases and containers on our dry wall, and even outdoor decor like pussy willow and curly willow branches. Our small and large air plants look great on their own or in a little container, especially the blown glass pineapple vases made by local Beth Woolley Monod. We also carry unique ceramics made by Ciara Jayne Linteau, another local who creates mountain-inspired pottery; they’re an option on our website to use as a vase for floral arrangements and are some of our favourite to create.

If your walls are empty, consider a trendy dried wreath or a piece of art made by our very own, voted Best Banff Artist 2020, Christine Ford.

If you want to go the route of making something for your mom instead (aww), think about getting creative with some fresh-bought flowers in store. Try your own hand at arranging a vase, or press flowers to use them in a photo album, frame, or piece of wall-art. And don’t worry about cards; we have a fantastic selection of blank art cards from local artists like Christine Ford, Teeny Botanist, Silly Goat Studio, and Bryony By Design.

Whatever your Mother’s Day may bring this year, we’re here to help wherever we can. Happy trails!
